COUNTY'S UNITED WAY SELECTS A NEW PRESIDENT.

Byline: Sonia Giordani Daily News Staff Writer

Following an extensive four-month nationwide search, the United Way of Ventura County named Sheryl Wiley Solomon as the organization's new president Thursday.

A private management consultant based in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  and the interim director for Ventura College's CalWORKS program, Solomon was selected from among 67 applications for the job left vacant in July when executive director Ernest Thurmond resigned. She is expected to step into the full-time paid position on March 1.

``We are very pleased to have selected a person with much experience with the United Way,'' said Diane Martell, president of the Council of United Way Agency Executives who served on the 10-member selections committee.

``She has experience with fund raising and communications as well as the understanding of the budgetary process and the pitfalls that can befall be·fall

an organization. She will no doubt be a strong leader.''

United Way administrators say the appointment marks the close of a two-year period of flux in leadership for the United Way of Ventura County. Thurmond's resignation followed a string of directors who resigned after about one year in the position or served in short-term interim posts. Cathy Brudnicki resigned as interim director last month.

by $300,000 and reducing donations to the umbrella group's 59 member agencies by 7.5 percent over this fiscal year.

``This year, we've been making good progress toward balancing our budget, but we still have a task ahead of us,'' said Spencer Garrett, a United Way board member who with colleague Roy Oliver has served in the volunteer position of the group's acting chief financial officer since July.

Garrett said the key to reviving the group's financial health will be its ability to collect on campaign pledges this year. David Harris David Harris may refer to:

And this year, the group has already surpassed 60 percent of its $5.7 million pledge goal for the 1997-98 fiscal year with $3.5 million in donor pledges.

Administrators say that among the most pressing challenges facing Solomon this year may be resonsibility for drafting and implementing a business plan for the organization and boosting pledge donations to support its 59 member agencies.

United Way's member agencies in the county will still forfeit 7.5 percent in contributions, but the promise of new leadership should bring stability, said Martell.

Solomon moved to California in 1996. For the past six months she has filled an interim position with Ventura College's CalWORKS program, coordinating more than 300 students currently receiving cash assistance and helping the county implement welfare reform, according to according to
