COUNTRY SINGER JO DEE MESSINA TO OPEN PALMDALE PLAYHOUSE'S 1996-97 SEASON.

Palmdale Playhouse's 1996-97 season features a premiere of ``Tarzan'' creator Edgar Rice Burroughs' only play, a visit from the political comedy troupe Capitol Steps, and return visits by Michael Martin Murphey Michael Martin Murphey is the best-selling performer of American Cowboy Music. Among the most respected singer-songwriters in pop and country-western music, Murphey has become the world's most prominent musical voice of the Western horseman, rancher, and cowboy.  and The Young Americans.

The playhouse season opens Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. with a performance by country singer Jo Dee Messina, who has recorded such songs as ``On a Wing and a Prayer'' and ``Do You Wanna wan·na

Also returning to Palmdale will be The Young Americans, who perform a mix of traditional and comical holiday songs. The group will perform shows Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors, military personnel, students and youth.

Also for the holidays, the playhouse will present the first in a series of free shows featuring the community's young performers.

At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 the Palmdale Youth/Community Orchestra will perform selections from Bach.

At 7:30 p.m. Dec. 14 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 15, the Palmdale Youth Choir and Palmdale Youth Dance Troupe will present a program featuring Handel's ``Hallelujah Hallelujah (hăl'əl`yə) or Alleluia (ăl–) [Heb.,=praise the Lord], joyful expression used in Hebrew worship; cf. Pss.  Chorus'' and modern and classical dance movements.

An exhibition of original paintings and photography of the holiday season will be shown from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 13-14 and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15.

Palmdale Repertory Theatre will present ``Once Upon a Mattress'' Feb. 7-8 and Feb. 14-15 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 9 and 16 at 2 p.m. The production is a musical version of the classic ``The Princess and the Pea.''

Tickets are $12.

Spring Continental Collage, the second in the series featuring young performers, will feature international folk dance International folk dance is a genre of dance wherein selected folk dances from multiple ethnic groups are done by the same dancers, typically as part of a regular recreational dance club, for performances or at other events. , music, and song beginning at 7:30 p.m. March 7 with a performance by the Palmdale Youth/Community Orchestra.

In conjunction, an art exhibition celebrating spring will be shown March 7-8 from 6 to 8 p.m. and March 9 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Desert Opera Theatre will present ``Madame Butterfly'' at 8 p.m. March 28-29 and April 4-5 and at 2 p.m. March 30 and April 6. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, military personnel and students, and $8 for youth.

Burroughs' ``You Lucky Girl,'' a comedy-romance set in the 1920s, will be presented at 8 p.m. April 25-26 and May 2-3 and at 2 p.m. April 27 and May 4.

Capping the season will be the third of the free performances by Palmdale youth, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. May 30 performance by the Palmdale Youth/Community Orchestra, which will play selections from Beethoven and Brahms.

The Palmdale Youth Choir and the Palmdale Youth Dance Troupe will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 31 and at 2 p.m. June 1.

An art exhibit on jazz in America will be shown from 6 to 8 p.m. May 30-31 and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. June 1.

The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
