The Welsh Liberal Democrats, by going into partnership government with Labour, gave the Assembly stability and a real programme of government. Many believe the Assembly has done little for the people of Wales. But just look at the list of achievements of the Mike German's Welsh Lib Dems, in partnership with Labour. We brought in free school milk for all infants, improving their health and helping the dairy industry. We re-introduced student grants, targeted at helping the poorest students. Smaller class sizes for primary schools were also our idea. For its first 18 months the Assembly achieved very little. In Wales you get free dental check-ups for under-25s and over 60s and free eye examinations for at-risk groups. For education, we invested pounds 300million over three years for school buildings. The Welsh Lib Dems want to recruit 8,000 extra doctors, nurses and clinical staff. The Welsh Lib Dems have been the driving force of the Assembly. We want to carry on delivering real and radical improvements for the Welsh people. We have over 300 fully costed commitments in our manifesto, all based on the values of creating opportunity, building community and attacking poverty. Older people are among the most vulnerable in our society. We owe them the best care we can afford. A Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Government will extend free entry to sports centres for young people under 16. Sport can raise the spirits of our children. It can provide a community focus for them and teach them valuable lessons such as promoting a healthy drug-free, crime-free lifestyle. What is good enough for Scotland should be good enough for Wales.
