The Antelope Valley
Hospital Counseling Center, coordinates a 7-month-old youth anger management program for kids 7 to 14, meeting with the youngsters in group sessions at elementary schools elementary school: see school.  in Palmdale and Lancaster.

``It's sad to see the violence that these kids commit,'' Ross said. ``What we try to do with our program is focus on the positive or what the kid has done right, instead of what the kid has done wrong. We also try to give them the attention that they might be lacking.''

Ross and other professionals are concerned about violence by young people, like Tuesday's tragedy in Colorado in which two teen gunmen killed or wounded more than 40 people at their high school.

``Juvenile behavior is becoming a real crisis,'' said Bill Pricer, a former Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

``These kids see nothing wrong with their behavior,'' Pricer said. ``We try to focus on goal-setting with the kids. If we can get kids to understand the basics then I think we can help them.''

Antelope Valley Hospital has offered family counseling services for years, with help from United Way funding, and last year branched out to the juvenile anger management program. They also have anger management groups for adults.

The juvenile anger management program was started because of problems at schools, and because counseling saw anger in the children who were part of the family counseling session, Ross said.

Run by Ross and marriage-family therapist trainee Jetta Zellner, the program has been very successful since it started near the end of September. Of the 51 youngsters it has seen, some have graduated and will serve as mentors to those kids that are new to the program.
