After Ferry's diet received attention, he said strangers approached him wanting to contribute to the stage fund as well as encourage his dedication. He started in February, weighing 392 pounds.

``I was at Wal-Mart with a couple of the high school kids after (a newspaper story) came out, and this woman came up to me and said she'd read about it,'' Ferry said. ``She took out her checkbook right there and wrote out a check for $20. No matter where I go, I'm getting encouragement.''

His plan to lose weight began with cutting out his beloved chocolates and candy candy: see confectionery.

, but turned into a visit to Weight Watchers and morning strolls on a treadmill.

``I think I'll make the 20 pounds. My energy level is pretty good,'' he said. ``This is exciting.''

Ferry's final weigh-in is April 4 and pledges will be collected after spring break.
