To appoint a replacement immediately or let the public vote in November are the two options facing the Palmdale City Council when Councilman Terry Judge resigns.

Judge, who was elected to his second term on the council in November 1997, said Wednesday that he plans to resign at the City Council's Feb. 24 meeting.

Following Judge's CERTIFICATE, JUDGE'S, English practice. The judge who tries the cause is authorized by several statutes in certain cases to certify, so as to decide when the party or parties shall or shall not be entitled to costs.  resignation, the city will have 30 days to make an appointment to fill the remaining term, which expires in November 2001, or wait until the next regularly scheduled election, Nov. 2.

Palmdale has used appointments to fill vacant council posts in the past, most recently in 1992. That year real estate agent and former Planning Commissioner Teri Jones was appointed to the council to fill the remaining two years of a council seat vacated by Jim Ledford when he was elected mayor.

``Personally, I think we have some capable individuals we could appoint,'' Ledford said. ``There are people who have knowledge of our strategic plan that we would not have to train. I don't want to go into a training mode.''

Ledford said he did not have any specific candidates in mind.

Councilwoman Shelley Sorsabal said she was interested in putting the issue to the voters in November, but wants first to hear from the city's attorneys and other staffers before deciding on how best to proceed.

``He has not resigned yet. It's kind of premature to talk about this,'' Sorsabal said.

Judge, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department This article is about the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, not to be confused with the smaller Los Angeles County Police

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) is a local law enforcement agency that serves Los Angeles County, California.
lieutenant LIEUTENANT. This word has now a narrower meaning than it formerly had; its true meaning is a deputy, a substitute, from the French lieu, (place or post) and tenant (holder). Among civil officers we have lieutenant governors, who in certain cases perform the duties of governors; (vide, the  in charge of Metrolink deputies, will become the operations lieutenant of the Palmdale station Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week. .

Because the city contracts with the Sheriff's Department for its law enforcement services, Judge said there is a potential conflict of interest.

``I'm disappointed he's going to have to leave,'' Sorsabal said. ``He was a great person to work with.''
