COUNCIL VOTES TO CLOSE BURBANK'S BIGGEST NIGHTSPOT.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

BURBANK - In a surprise twist to what seemed like a true compromise, the City Council voted Tuesday to shut down the city's largest nightspot.

The council voted 4-1 to revoke To annul or make void by recalling or taking back; to cancel, rescind, repeal, or reverse.

conditional-use permit approved last week during a public hearing was unfair. The council amended the permit Sept. 23 after hearing arguments that Gitana logged too many calls for police service, accruing more than $7,000 in city costs.

Under its conditional-use permit, the establishment is allowed only three calls for service a month.

Council members believed closing the nightclub portion of Gitana would ease the crowds, and allow the business to continue.

Darryl Mounger, an attorney for Gitana, told the council that if the nightclub were closed and the hours of operation of the restaurant and sports club A sports club, athletics club or sports association is an eclectic institution oriented to multiple sports, which fields many teams and has varied sports departments in several sports, working under the same umbrella organization.  cut back from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m., the owners would lose business, and possibly the liquor license Noun 1. liquor license - a license authorizing the holder to sell alcoholic beverages

He also said it was impossible to assign certain hours for certain parts of the complex and not others. ``Give us 30 days to change the nature of the beast Nature of the Beast is the ninth episode of The WB television series Birds of Prey. The episode aired on December 18, 2003. Summary

But the council said the owners of Gitana had had since April, when the issue was first brought to the council's attention, to beef up security and make other improvements.

Because the owners did not want to agree to all the proposed amendments to the permit Tuesday night, and because amending the permit for parts of the complex and not others seemed complicated, the council voted to revoke the business's permit entirely.

``We tried for best of both worlds last week,'' said Councilman Jef Vander Borght, who called the issue a cancer in a fatal situation.

Council members Dave Golonski, Todd Campbell, and Marsha Ramos, agreed.

Mayor Stacey Murphy, however, voted to give the nightspot one last chance, saying she agreed with revoking the permit, but would have liked the restaurant to stay open.

After the council's decision, Mounger and Gitana landlord Robert Gangi said only that they were stunned stun
