The building used primarily for meals is 5,600 square feet, and the building used mainly for recreation is 6,500 square feet.

The two buildings would be replaced with one 24,000-square-foot structure, Chapjian said.

The City Council is weighing two options that would include underground parking and cost between $20.1 million and $20.4 million, and one option without the parking that would cost $12 million.

Construction would take 18 months to 24 months.

Officials also are considering adding a swimming pool, which would boost the cost to between $30.2 million and $48 million.

``When the seniors aren't using the facility, we'd like to be able to program that for other members of the community,'' Chapjian said.

Yousefian said the Joslyn Adult Center in Burbank is a model for the project.

``It offers many programs that maybe we don't, and so our goal is to see if we can provide a center that provides other services that maybe we are not providing,'' he said.
