COUNCIL TO REVIVE MAYOR ISSUE.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - For the second time in less than a year, the City Council will consider asking voters to decide whether they want to elect their mayor directly.

Council members, who now choose the mayor from among themselves, voted 3-2 this week to put the matter on the agenda for their Feb. 8 meeting, despite dissenters' arguments that action should be delayed.

Councilwoman Laurene Weste called for a study session and more information before a council vote on the issue.

Klajic said the current system of choosing a mayor has promoted politicking on the council. A separate mayoral election would guarantee that voters get their leader of choice, she said in a recent interview.

Ferry says he continues to think the voters should directly elect a mayor to a four-year term. Councilwoman Jan Heidt continues to oppose such a measure, arguing that all elected council members are qualified to serve as leaders. Heidt says she would prefer to reinstitute the rotation policy.
