COUNCIL TO MULL PROPOSAL ZINE WANTS SHERIFF TO ASSIST LAPD.

A Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  city official pushed ahead Friday with his effort to bring in the Sheriff's Department to augment LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

is one of the finest in the nation,'' said City Councilman Dennis Zine, a former LAPD traffic sergeant. ``But this is simply a matter of the department not having enough bodies to do the basic patrols.

``We have a growing crime rate and more homicides, and we need officers on the street to do patrols.''

Zine said he will introduce a motion Tuesday to the full City Council to beef up some patrols with sheriff's deputies, an idea that will be reviewed by the Public Safety Committee. Zine and Councilman Nick Pacheco Lauro "Nick" Pacheco, Jr. is an American attorney, politician, and a member of the Democratic Party. Pacheco served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council (1999-2003).  said they want the pilot program to be run in the West San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

and Hollenbeck areas, which have sheriff's stations nearby.

Zine, a 33-year LAPD veteran, advanced the proposal earlier this week after an informal discussion with Sheriff Lee Baca Leroy David Baca (b. May 27 1942, East Los Angeles, California) is the Sheriff of Los Angeles County, California.

After graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School (Los Angeles) in 1960, Baca worked his way through East Los Angeles College before starting with the L.A.

Baca has said the plan would need a wide-ranging study and require the cooperation of Mayor James Hahn and the LAPD.

Hahn said he believes the city would be better off improving morale and recruitment efforts within the LAPD.

The Sheriff's Department currently contracts its services to 41 cities in Los Angeles County, including Santa Clarita, Lancaster and Palmdale. It charges $231,669, plus a 6 percent fee that goes into a liability pool, for a one-person patrol car.

Zine said he understands the mayor's point, but said the crime problems are too great to ignore.

``We have pockets in Reseda and Canoga Park where gangs are coming back,'' Zine said. ``We have businesses along Ventura Boulevard targeted by graffiti and glass etchings. We have to get a handle on this now before it's too late.

``We can't afford to sit by and watch this happen.''
