COUNCIL TO CONSIDER REPLACEMENT FOR GOMEZ.

Byline: Naush Boghossian Staff Writer

GLENDALE - The City Council will meet Tuesday to discuss replacing Councilman Gus Gomez, who is being sworn in Monday as a Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Superior Court judge.

Under the City Charter, the council must appoint a replacement within 30 days. The appointee APPOINTEE. A person who is appointed or selected for a particular purpose; as the appointee under a power, is the person who is to receive the benefit of the trust or power.  will serve until the vacancy is filled during the April 5 municipal election.

``It's not a choice. It's not whether we like it or not,'' said Mayor Bob Yousefian. ``The council has to do its due diligence Research; analysis; your homework. This term has caught on in all industries, because it sounds so "wired." Who would want to do analysis or research when they can do due diligence. See wired. , go through the process and try really hard to find somebody at least three councilmen can agree on.''

Among names that have been mentioned as possible successors to Gomez are former Mayor Eileen Givens; Maria Rochart, executive director of the New Horizons Family Center; Rob Sharkey, past president of the Glendale Homeowners Coordinating Council; Marc Stirdivant, a member of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  advisory committee; and Glendale resident Herbert Molano.

He was recently notified that he has been selected by the Board of Directors and the Selection Committee of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) as a recipient of the 2006 Ellis Island  said they would like to see the seat remain open.

``We're talking two months - and we should bring in somebody that has not campaigned or come forward with what they believe in?'' Weaver asked. ``I don't see the value. And three of us would have to agree on one and I doubt that's going to happen with this dysfunctional dys·func·tion also dis·func·tion

Manoukian, who's particularly opposed to giving someone an advantage in the upcoming council election, said the council should just let the community decide during the election.

``I think we can survive with four councilmen for three months,'' he said. ``And I don't see why we should give one candidate or another the advantage over other candidates. It's not fair to the community.''

Councilman Frank Quintero did not return phone calls.

And an appointee would simply promote the interests of the person who recommended the appointment, Weaver said.

``Any one of us on the council can say this is a great person, when probably the one we propose promotes the agenda we believe in,'' Weaver said. ``And I can't see anybody who's supposed to be running be appointed and then be able to put the word incumbency in·cum·ben·cy
