COUNCIL SPLITS $750,000 FOR SIDEWALK WORK.

Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer

Flooded with complaints about cracked and uneven sidewalks, the City Council allocated $750,000 Tuesday for a special effort to make repairs throughout Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. .

The council voted to allocate $50,000 to each of the 15 council districts even though members admitted the money is a drop in the bucket A reserved amount of memory that holds a single item or multiple items of data. ``It really isn't going to solve the major problem, and nobody is suggesting that it will,'' Councilman Richard Alarcon told his colleagues. ``But it does give a sense of moving forward to the people who do call you and ask for some level of sidewalk repair.''

Alarcon said the money can be used to remove trees that are pushing up sidewalks or to patch cracks or holes in the sidewalks themselves.

Councilwoman Rita Walters Rita Walters (1930-) is currently the commissioner of the Los Angeles Public Library. Prior to this position, she served on the Los Angeles City Council representing the 9th district. During that time, she chaired the Arts, Health & Humanities Committee.  voted against the measure, saying she would rather the money be given to city repair crews to decide citywide priorities, rather than giving it to each council district for use by contractors.

Walters said some action is needed to repair sidewalks which have resulted in trip-and-fall accidents that last year cost the city about $1.3 million.

``When you look at the money that we are paying each year in settlement of trip-and-fall accidents, it seems a better use of the money to have the city crews doing it,'' she said. ``We can assure the quality of work throughout the city.''

Councilman Hal Bernson Hal Bernson served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 12th district. He was chair of the Transportation Committee. Prior to being on the City Council, he served in the Navy.
