City Council meetings will shift from Monday Monday: see week.  nights to Thursday Thursday: see week.  nights to allow residents more time to review agenda items, council members said Tuesday.

Effective in July, meeting nights will change from the first and third Monday of each month to the second and fourth Thursdays.

Typically, agendas are given to the council Wednesdays and released to the media and the public Thursday. Occasionally late items are added to the agenda Friday.

With the change, council members will receive their agendas Wednesdays. The agendas will be released to the media and made available to the public Thursday of the week before the meeting.

``It will give them time to do their research,'' said Councilwoman Deborah Shelton Deborah Shelton (born November 21, 1948) is an American beauty queen and actress.

Shelton first won the Miss Virginia USA title and was subsequently crowned Miss USA in May 1970.

Changing the night would help avoid controversy over late additions to the agenda, council members said, such as the Friday in November 1994 when Frank Roberts Frank Roberts may refer to:
  • Frank Roberts (diplomat) (1907-1998), British diplomat
  • Frank Roberts (footballer) (born 1893), English footballer
  • Frank Crowther Roberts (1891-1982), English recipient of the Victoria Cross

 added a proposal to vote the following Monday on extending City Manager Jim Gilley's contract of employment.

That action drew angry responses from residents and council members Deborah Shelton and Michael Singer over the lack of time to review the contract provisions.
