COUNCIL RESOLUTION OPPOSES CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.

Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  members entered the debate on gay marriage Wednesday with a resolution opposing President George W. Bush's proposal for a constitutional amendment to recognize only heterosexual marriages.

The resolution was introduced by council members Eric Garcetti Eric Garcetti (born 1971) is the son of former Los Angeles county district attorney Gil Garcetti, and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 2001. He was reelected in 2005. , Jack Weiss Jack Weiss, is a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 5th district. Weiss was elected in 2001 and reelected in 2005. The 5th district includes parts of the Westside and the San Fernando Valley.  and Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  and signed by four of their colleagues. It is scheduled to be voted on by the full council next week.

Garcetti said the federal government should leave the question of who may marry to states and cities.

In a radio call-in show earlier Wednesday, Mayor James Hahn agreed.

``I think there are a lot more important issues to deal with than this,'' Hahn said during his ``Ask the Mayor'' radio show on KFWB-AM (980). ``The Constitution has been amended only a few times, and I don't think this is an issue that should be added. I think each state should decide what it wants to do.''
