Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The Santa Clarita Sports Complex will be renamed for former City Manager George Caravalho, who led the push to transform an abandoned cosmetics warehouse complex into the recreation center.

The City Council voted 4-0 Tuesday night to rechristen the Canyon Country facility as the George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex.

``As we look back at the history of our community, we cannot help but recognize the influence that George Caravalho had on Santa Clarita,'' Councilman Bob Kellar said. ``We truly flourished under his guidance.''

``I'm amazed,'' said Caravalho, who was Santa Clarita's first city manager. ``It's quite a tribute.''

Councilwoman Marsha McLean and Mayor Frank Ferry credited Caravalho with the vision that led to the creation of the complex, which includes a gymnasium, a teen activities center and a skate park. ``George was a true founder and a pioneer,'' Ferry said. ``He set the vision for Santa Clarita that calls for more money to be spent on our youth through recreation programs than on police services.''

Councilwoman Laurene Weste, who often clashed with Caravalho and spearheaded an effort to fire him last year, said the Sports Complex was unique and an integral part of Santa Clarita.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he
was not present at the meeting.

At Caravalho's recommendation, the city purchased what would become the Sports Complex for $3.08 million in 1998 and converted it from a Merle merle
