COUNCIL OKS OFFICE SPACE USE.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

PALMDALE - A newly formed nonprofit institute will use a portion of the former Palmdale courthouse as a base for its efforts to promote science and technology education among young people.

The Palmdale City Council voted 4-0 Wednesday, with Mayor Jim Ledford absent, to lease 5,800 square feet of the former courthouse to AERO Institute for $1 a year. The institute plans to use the space for conducting classes and workshops and for office space.

``Not only does it promote education, but this supports our No. 1 industry - aerospace,'' said Mayor Pro Tem [Latin, For the time being.] An abbreviation used for pro tempore, Latin for "temporary or provisional."

The institute will begin moving into the complex March 1, and will probably have 10 to 15 people staffing the building, said Susan Miller Susan Miller is the name of:

`` 'Elated,' I believe, is the word,'' Miller said of the lease agreement. ``The Palmdale City Council was so enthusiastic. We're looking forward to living up to their expectations.''

The institute hopes to begin offering programs out of the complex this spring.

One expected immediate benefit of the new building is that NASA plans to bring its educator resource center from Dryden to the complex, making it more accessible for teachers. The center contains materials for use by teachers in their science and math curricula, such as publications, reference books, slides, audio and video cassettes, computer programs, CD- ROMs, lesson plans and activities, and posters.

The lease agreement is for one year, with three one-year options. The agreement is similar to one the city had with Los Angeles County when it operated the complex for civil court proceedings. While the lease is only for a dollar a year, the institute will be responsible for the operations and upkeep of the complex, including utilities.

The institute is working on programs aimed at inspiring students from kindergarten through high school to pursue science, math and technical careers, as well as providing technical, undergraduate and graduate training.

Located at the southwest corner of 9th Street East and Avenue Q-10, the Palmdale courthouse opened in February 2001, bringing civil cases back to the Antelope Valley for the first time in 11 years. For lack of room in the old Lancaster courthouse at Avenue J-2 and 10th Street West, civil cases had been transferred out of the Antelope Valley, and half the valley's criminal cases are heard in courts in Van Nuys or elsewhere.

The rest of the courthouse complex will be used to help consolidate city offices that are now located away from the Civic Center, including the city's personnel office.
