COUNCIL OKS $850,000 FOR TREE-TRIMMING.

Byline: Daily News

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  approved a motion Friday to allocate $850,000 for tree-trimming services after thousands of residents said massive branches of city trees are breaking off.

The city's Bureau of Street Services has received 3,800 emergency calls for fallen tree limbs this summer, a 50 percent increase over last year, officials have said.

Most of those calls are from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

, which has experienced a record-breaking heat wave.

He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , who helped craft the motion with Councilmen Ed Reyes Ed P. Tree experts say the triple-digit temperatures of the past few weeks are partially to blame for the phenomenon, known as ``summer limb drop syndrome.''

By midweek, officials said, they were redeploying city crews to the Valley to deal with the issue.

Officials said crews that usually fill potholes and fix streetlights will instead spend their workdays focusing on a backlog of tree complaints.

Downed tree limbs can be reported by calling 311, the city's nonemergency hotline, or (213) 978-0721 to talk to a constituent-service representative in the Mayor's Office.
