COUNCIL NAMES GOLDEN VALLEY ROAD ITS NO. 1 TRANSIT GOAL.

Byline: Heather MacDonald Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Getting Golden Valley Road built is now the city of Santa Clarita's top transportation priority.

The City Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution placing Golden Valley at the top of the list of a dozen roads proposed to be built throughout the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. .

The largely symbolic action, presented by Councilwoman Laurene Weste, will make it easier for the city to snag federal and state grants to fund the $100 million road.

``This is crucial to the future of our city and our valley,'' Weste said.

Golden Valley, along with the extension of Newhall Ranch Road, will connect the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California.  problems,'' said Mark Yamarone, the city's transportation funding coordinator. ``This will make my job easier.''

The council had already identified Golden Valley as a priority through the budgetary process last year, but Tuesday's action codifies that sentiment.

Councilman Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he
said he was concerned that this resolution, once passed, would make it more difficult to complete other proposed roads, if funding or development made them possible before Golden Valley is funded.

``Our long-term goal is to build all of the roads, and this does nothing to challenge that,'' Yamarone told Smyth.

The council dismissed worries from several residents that Golden Valley Road would harm the environment and was designed to accommodate The Newhall Land and Farming Company's massive Newhall Ranch project, which is on hold after a Kern County judge halted the development.

council had emphasized the connection of Wiley Canyon Road to Via Princessa and Magic Mountain Parkway, but delays in the development of the center of the city have pushed those projects to the back burner, Yamarone said.
