COUNCIL MARVELS AT PARK'S REVIVAL.

Proudly showing off a cleaner, brighter and safer MacArthur Park, the City Council held a special meeting Wednesday night on the formerly crime-plagued grounds.

The meeting came just a week after the Blue Ribbon blue ribbon

Those strategies, together with collaboration between police and the community, helped drive drug dealers, gamblers and gang members out of MacArthur Park.

``Five years ago, no one could have imagined that we would ever host a City Council meeting at MacArthur Park,'' said Councilman Ed Reyes Ed P. Reyes has served on the Los Angeles City Council since April 2001. A native of Northeast Los Angeles, Councilmember Reyes represents many of the neighborhoods he grew up in including Lincoln Heights and Cypress Park. , who represents the area.

The council also used Wednesday's meeting to endorse Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's Million Trees Initiative, a citywide program that will emphasize the use of drought-tolerant varieties as it ``greens'' blighted neighborhoods and the areas around schools and along the Los Angeles River The Los Angeles River is an intermittent river flowing through Los Angeles County, California, from Canoga Park in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, 51 miles (82 km) southeast to its mouth in Long Beach. .

Project leaders will premiere the Million Trees Initiative Web site today, with the official launch of the tree-planting effort slated for the fall.
