Byline: James Nash Staff Writer

Mayor James Hahn's three nominees to the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Airport Commission won the blessing of a key City Council committee Tuesday, despite concerns that they would represent Hahn and not residents near Los Angeles International and Van Nuys airports Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits. .

The Commerce, Energy and Natural Resources Committee approved W. Jerome Stanley, David Voss and Walter Zifkin to serve on the Board of Airport Commissioners.

The nominations were approved unanimously, despite concerns from two residents at a special meeting of the committee in Westchester that the commissioners would not act independently of Hahn.

``Why not just clone clone, group of organisms, all of which are descended from a single individual through asexual reproduction, as in a pure cell culture of bacteria. Except for changes in the hereditary material that come about by mutation, all members of a clone are genetically  Mayor Hahn and put all of his clones on the commissions?'' asked Carole Hossan, a Westchester activist.

All three nominees pledged to evaluate plans for LAX and Van Nuys airports with open minds.

Councilman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , who represents Van Nuys, voted for Stanley's appointment, but questioned the wisdom of Hahn picking the newcomer to Encino as the Valley representative.

``I struggle with the wisdom of the Mayor's Office to have recommended you for that particular spot - not to be on the commission, but for the Valley position,'' Cardenas told Stanley.

Stanley said he sympathizes with residents who are bothered by noise at Van Nuys Airport.

``When I sit at home and hear the planes above me, I can guarantee the planes affect us as much as the planes affect people here in Westchester,'' Stanley said.

On May 20, Hahn nominated the three to replace members of the Board of Airport Commissioners who had resigned or been removed.

Stanley was tapped to replace Eileen Levine as the Valley's representative on the panel.

Voss was nominated to replace former commission President Ted Stein, who stepped down amid probes into alleged ``pay to play'' contracting at the airport agency.

Hahn picked Zifkin to replace Alan Llorens, whom the mayor removed from the panel after Llorens criticized an aspect of Hahn's proposal to modernize mod·ern·ize
