COUNCIL CHOOSES DISTRICT 2 VOTE DATE.

And if no candidate gets a majority of the vote, the top two contenders will face off in a runoff March 5, coinciding with the state election.

The council, in setting the date, also gave a boost to the contenders in their ability to raise funds. The council gave preliminary approval to a measure to allow them to begin raising money for the election before the seat is vacated by Wachs on Oct. 1.

Although the action might provide only an extra two-week window for fund raising, most involved in the upcoming election said they did not expect it to make much difference.

``The well-known candidates will be able to raise as much as they want,'' said one consultant, asking not to be identified. ``The lesser known candidates will still have problems.''

Two of the leading candidates are Assemblyman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley. , D-Mission Hills, and DreamWorks executive Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007. , who worked for former Mayor Tom Bradley.

Two others expected in the race are Lyn Shaw, manager of a social services agency, and Gina Ruiz-Goldman, a Sun Valley businesswoman.

Wachs plans to resign Oct. 1 to head a New York New York, state, United States
