COUGARS TO TAKE FIELD ONCE AGAIN.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

The process began more than a year ago and ends tonight in the desert.

Seventeen years later, they play football once again.

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  embarks again on a gridiron path with its opener at 7 at College of the Desert.

Too bad the first game is so far away. Much of the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  community that was so in favor of returning junior college football to Valencia isn't expected to make the two-hour car trip. Canyons coach Chuck Lyon said there are no plans for rooter buses.

Still, the excitement is high for the players and coaches. Their West Coast, four-receiver offense and 4-3 Flex A development system for Flash-based applications from Adobe. Introduced in 2004 as a J2EE application, Flex compiles ActionScript code and XML-based user interface descriptions (MXML) into binary Flash files (SWF files).  defense is in place, they played well in their scrimmage last week at San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  Mesa, and they're at last stepping on a playing field.

``We're as ready as we can get,'' Lyon declared earlier this week. ``Let's go Let's Go may refer to: Television
  • Let's Go (Philippine TV series), a teen Philippine sitcom on ABS-CBN
  • Let's Go (New Zealand TV series), a New Zealand television music show
  • Let's Go
 play.''

In Desert, the Cougars have a very beatable opponent. It doesn't have many sophomores (five, compared to Canyons' three), and it is coming off a 2-8 year.

Coach Steve Dostal said his team needs to be able to execute and not commit turnovers, which is what happened last year.

Unfortunately for Dostal, and fortunately for Canyons, Desert's 50 Eagle defense doesn't defend the West Coast very well. Desert plays in a zone, so Canyons quarterbacks Pete Dirksen, Chris Kobe and Kevin Carrasco should pile up some yardage yard·age 1

. All will play, Lyon said, with Dirksen starting.

Plus, Desert's offensive line, while larger than Canyons', also is slower. John Martinez John Martinez(Also known as John Death) is a Musician based out of Southern California who is currently playing guitar in a Post hardcore band called A Static Lullaby. He has also played in bands such as Adair, Falling Cycle, Screams Of Serenity, Hit The Switch, and others.  is 6-foot-5 and 350 pounds. Danny Aguirre is 6-2, 335. They will be hard-pressed to stop Canyons' talented linebacking corps of Kevin Giberson, Sean Cogswell, Joe Dunster and Mike Kowalczyk.

Desert likes to run and will go with Eric Lumpkin, who was an all-Foothill Conference defensive back last year, at running back. He requested a switch to offense, and Dostal accommodated.

But watch out for the running quarterbacks, freshmen D.J. Maston and Todd Blaise, Dostal said.
