Anna Meticchechia got more than she bargained for as team manager of College of the Canyons' women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. ``She asked if she had to run, too,'' Canyons coach Greg Herrick said. ``I said of course, you're just like anyone else on the team.''

Herrick hasn't put Meticchechia in a game yet, but he certainly was tempted to in the Sacramento tournament when his Cougars were down to eight players because of injury and illness in the championship game Dec. 22.

Canyons (9-2), buoyed by a career-high 18 points and 10 rebounds from freshman forward Gohar Tumanian, however, managed to hold on for a 74-69 win for its fifth victory in a row.

The Cougars, ranked third in the state preseason poll, were without a leading scorer and point guard Kyetra Brown, who stayed home from the the three-day tournament because she had a cold.

Cordell was sidelined by the flu the day of the championship, leaving Herrick with just eight players.

``We were just hanging on,'' Herrick said. ``We had to back off the full-court pressure because we were out of gas. We were calling timeouts so we could rest.''

Guard LaCresha Clark helped pick up the slack in Brown's absence, playing 40 minutes in the championship and contributing 15 points and 10 assists.

Center Zevette Mitchell, who pulled down 18 rebounds in the Cougars' 70-59 semifinal victory over Sierra, was also selected to the all-tournament team for Canyons.

``Things didn't go as expected,'' freshman Tami Ross said. ``We were just pulling for each other.''

A lack of players was hardly a concern for Herrick before the season. The Cougars started with 14 players, but the number has slowly dwindled to a point where car problems, illness and injuries left Canyons with just six players during one practice.

``It's been difficult to have a practice,'' Herrick said. ```We've got our manager and coaches out there. Pretty soon, I'm going to have to sneak my son out of the house and throw him in, too.''
