``We were trying to do it with mirrors,'' said Canyons coach Greg Herrick.

Harrick had promised his players that if they won the tournament he would take them to his condo in Maui. And with nine healthy players entering the tournament, the Cougars had an excellent chance.

``Someone asked me if we were going to see the sights,'' Herrick said. ``I said, `We're here to play basketball, not vacation.' ''

The vacation, after all, would come after the championship game.

``Getting here wasn't important,'' Herrick said after Friday's victory. ``Winning it is important.''

After beating Merced, Canyons players started chanting, ``Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii.'' They didn't mind that the coach didn't let them do much sightseeing while in the Bay Area. Their thoughts were on the championship game and a much bigger celebration.

Despite the loss, Herrick said he will keep his promise to the team and take them to the Hawaiian Gardens restaurant. After a 33-5 season, they deserve it, he said.

``We had a great year,'' Herrick said. ``I think we have to be considered a great team. (The Pirates) were just too good.''
