COUGARS COACH REACHES 100 WINS.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  coach Greg Herrick managed to keep his 100th coaching victory a secret from his team last week.

The Cougars, though, are well aware of Herrick's upcoming birthday, Wednesday. College of the Canyons will play Valley for the Western State Conference South Division lead the preceding night.

``We want to score 100 points for his birthday,'' said freshman forward Gohar Tumanian.

When Herrick took over as coach in 1992-93, he wasn't sure he would be around long enough at College of the Canyons to celebrate his 44th birthday or 100th victory.

``I polled 10 people and seven told me not to take it,'' Herrick said. ``So, naturally, I took it. I've always believed the best job is the one you presently have. It was a pretty dramatic challenge.''

``It was a very personal victory for me,'' Herrick said. ``I've never stuck around long enough at one place to get to 100. All it does is represent the quality of players I've had at College of the Canyons.''

Herrick amassed 98 victories and two City Section 3-A division boys' titles at Cleveland High from 1979-85 and won 81 games and two Foothill League titles at Hart from 1987-92 before coming to College of the Canyons.

At the school, Herrick, who is now 101-54, has guided the Cougars to two WSC WSC Winter Symposium on Chemometrics

``A milestone like your 100th victory is like a lunar eclipse,'' Herrick said. ``Everybody talks about them when they happen but forget about it until the next one comes along. I might not get to 200 until 2008.''

``He can turn a good player into a great one,'' Brown said about Herrick. ``Everybody is capable of carrying the load and putting it in. As with his boys' teams, Herrick's game has been and still is a coast-to-coast fast break offense.

``I've never seen it done before in women's basketball,'' Herrick said. ``I used to fall asleep watching women's games. I never saw an entire game before I started coaching at Canyons. I wanted to be a pioneer and make it interesting.''
