Costs for the 12,500-square-foot, single-story building had been estimated at $4.7 million, but the lowest bid came at $6.6 million, prompting Ventura Ventura (vĕnt`rə), city (1990 pop. 92,575), seat of Ventura co., SW Calif., on the Pacific coast in a farm and oil region; inc. 1866.  County Community College District trustees to seek new bids.

``When the bids started coming in this much higher, staff began taking another look at it to see what else we can be doing to get the facility built,'' said college board President Cheryl Heitmann. ``We'll go out for bids relatively shortly. This facility will be built.''

The project will be paid for through Measure S - a $356 million bond issue approved by voters in 2002 for new construction and modernization modernization

Project manager Dick Jones said the district will open new bids in December. Construction should begin early next year and is expected to take one year, officials said.

Center coordinator Linda Cravens Cravens Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Limited was a railway car builder in Sheffield, England and supplier of the London Underground A60 Stock; and diesel multiple units and electric multiple units to British Railways.  said the project budget was made four years ago, which may be why the numbers failed to add up.

Moorpark College began operating a day care program in the 1970s for children of registered students, staff and faculty. The center also serves as a training lab for students in child development courses.

Today, the center is licensed for 68 children at a time, but in any given week 130 children walk through its doors.

Located in the Applied Arts Building of Moorpark College, the child care program for toddlers and preschoolers is in a remodeled facility never intended to be a child development center, Cravens said.

One room was built for children; three others have been remodeled as classrooms, she said.

The new building will have five classrooms, a new playground Playground - A visual language for children, developed for Apple's Vivarium Project. OOPSLA 89 or 90? , kitchen, staff and work room as well as office space.

With the additional room, the child development center will be licensed for about 100 children and will have more student capacity. Currently, there are about 70 people on the waiting list hoping to get into the nationally recognized program.

``This will be an appropriate facility for the children and lab for our students,'' Cravens said.
