COSMOPOLITAN STOCKHOLM STILL HAS SMALL-TOWN FEEL.

Morning daily tabloid newspaper published in New York City. It was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson and his cousin Robert McCormick as a subsidiary of the Tribune Co. of Chicago. The first successful tabloid-format newspaper in the U.S.
 

It's beautiful, friendly, clean and safe. There are more restaurants per capita [Latin, By the heads or polls.] A term used in the Descent and Distribution of the estate of one who dies without a will. It means to share and share alike according to the number of individuals.  than in most other European cities and a wealth of cultural attractions, including 70 museums. You can actually swim and fish right in the city center. Built on 14 islands, it's called ``Beauty on Water.''

Sound like touristic hype? Not in Stockholm.

``It's all true,'' says Sylvie Kjellin of the Stockholm Information Service. ``We've also been designated Europe's Cultural Capital in 1998 and we have made a bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2004.''

Anyone would indeed be hard-pressed to find fault with this cosmopolitan city of 1.6 million that still has a small-town feel.

Stockholm's compact Gamla Stan Gamla stan (The Old City), sometimes called Staden mellan broarna (The City between the Bridges), is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Gamla stan consists primarily of the island Stadsholmen.  (Old Town) is a walker's dream. It's a thrill to get lost in the maze of winding streets and medieval alleyways with architecture dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. . Buy Swedish sweets in the candy stores. And don't overlook the second-hand stores for bargains.

 for the literary crowd and Fem Sma Hus (Nygrand 10) is a collection of five small homes, joined to form a charming restaurant.

If you're on a budget, there's reasonably priced pasta, pizza and Chinese food. An excellent place for smorgasbord is the plethora of delicatessens in a classical market hall, Ostermalmshallen (Ostermalmstorg).

In the center of town is NK, a large department store that sells everything. (Did you know that tennis great Bjorn Borg has a new line of men's underwear, in all the latest fashion styles and colors?) For famous Swedish crystal, there's Galleri Orrefors (Strandvagen 15) and Svenskt Glas (Birger Jarlsgatan 8).

Everything is very accessible, either on foot, by bus or the swift and efficient underground, often described as the world's longest art gallery.

To make your visit totally painless, stop first at the centrally located SwedenHouse (Hamngatan 27), which includes the Tourist Center, Excursion Shop and a currency exchange. The Guide Center provides information and guidebooks. Sweden Shop has a large selection of Swedish souvenirs, including a fishing line if you feel inclined to try it out. Swedish literature may have flourished in early medieval times, but few written traces remain.
, and Stockholm Today, with multi-media booths located throughout the area, has interactive terminals with a printer and phone where you can book a hotel or learn about events or attractions.

). It includes free admission to more than 70 attractions, travel on buses and the underground, a guidebook and sightseeing by bus or boat.

Take a boat trip around Djurgarden or under the bridges of Stockholm. Book a romantic sunset dinner cruise - the archipelago Archipelago (ärkĭpĕl`əgō) [Ital., from Gr.=chief sea], ancient name of the Aegean Sea, later applied to the numerous islands it contains. The word now designates any cluster of islands. , which has 24,000 islands, begins just outside city center.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.
