COSBY URGES CAUTION : COMEDIAN WANTS POLICE TO BE THOROUGH IN SON'S CASE.

Byline: Mary Beth Alexander Daily News Staff Writer

As police search for his son's killer, comedian Bill Cosby William Henry "Bill" Cosby, Jr., Ed.D. (born July 12 1937) is an American actor, comedian, television producer, and activist.  to take precautions in their investigation to make sure the problems that complicated the O.J. Simpson murder trial don't occur again.

In his first interview since the Jan. 16 death of his only son, Ennis, Cosby told CBS-TV news anchor Dan Rather that he wants detectives to properly handle any evidence they collect if they find who killed his child.

``When they find him, I want it laid out,'' Cosby said in the interview, part of which were broadcast Monday. ``I don't want - well, they took the blood, they dropped it and it's a sock and everything.''

Cosby said he wants whoever represents the accused killer in court to be accountable if the verdict is guilty.

``I want the defense to sign papers saying if I lose this case, it's proven that he is or she is the killer, then I will take the same punishment as my client,'' he said.

LAPD spokesman Cmdr. Tim McBride said he was not offended by Cosby's criticism of how the department handled the Simpson case.

``If anything, he's maintained a consistent support position,'' McBride said. ``He's taken a consistently strong approach of support.''

McBride said the police have learned from the Simpson case and want to avoid the same complications - questions about evidence collection and tampering and the integrity of detectives.

``We are certainly proceeding, doing the best job we can do,'' McBride said. ``I don't think we want to draw any comparisons or anything like that. It's a separate case . . . really no resemblance whatsoever.''

Police continue to plow through to execute a difficult or laborious task steadily, esp. one containing many parts; as, he plowed through the stack of correspondence until all had been answered.

Cosby family spokesman David Brokaw said the entertainer continues to support the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Department's efforts.

``The very first thing that he said publicly after this happened, was that we have full confidence in the LAPD,'' Brokaw said.

Also during the interview, Cosby acknowledged he had a ``rendezvous'' with the mother of Autumn Jackson, the 22-year-old woman who claims she is Cosby's daughter out of wedlock wed·lock

``There is a possibility. If you said did you make love to the woman, the answer is `yes,' '' Cosby said.

``The mother told me - the woman that I had a rendezvous with - told me I am the father,'' Cosby said.

``On the birth certificate, it's not my name. I had not spoken to the mother during her pregnancy nor her delivery nor some 14 months until we finally spoke. Then one day when I called her for a second rendezvous, she came and she made the announcement,'' he said.

The girl's mother, a Canyon Country resident, said Monday that she knows Cosby, but declined to respond specifically to Cosby's interview with Rather or her relationship with the actor.

``I'm up to my neck in legalities,'' Shawn Rene Thompson told the Daily News. ``I'm not saying that everything he said is the truth. As far as I am concerned, he's a great person.''

Cosby called Rather and initiated the interview, which was conducted at the studio where his comedy series, ``Cosby,'' is taped. Brokaw said the entertainer wanted to be frank with the public before he returned to work Monday.

``He knew that at some point, he was going to have to address the public,'' Brokaw said.

``Bill Cosby tells the truth to himself, to his public. He's always told the truth,'' Brokaw said. ``He has steadfastly maintained that he's not the father. And, he's quite comfortable in allowing the process of jurisprudence jurisprudence (jr'ĭsprd`əns), study of the nature and the origin and development of law.  to take place.''
