Brokaw hopes the capture of the suspect will help bring closure to the Cosby family. The family has had a difficult time dealing with their grief while at the same time awaiting developments in the investigation, he said.

``It has been extremely frustrating for the family,'' said Brokaw. ``They have enough of a challenge just dealing with the grief.''

Investigators initially said they believed that his flashy car, worth $100,000, may have made him a target, but Williams did not disclose a motive Wednesday night.

The chief said the department got a break in the case after two of more than 800 leads police received in the case showed promise. The department's Special Investigations Section placed the suspect under surveillance, leading to the arrest, he said.

``We located this individual early this (Wednesday) morning,'' Williams said. He declined to reveal any other details about the suspect or describe any of the evidence collected in the case.

Williams said the two-month investigation was not unusually long, calling the arrest the result of ``a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck.''

The chief said he contacted Bill Cosby and his wife to alert them about 8 p.m. Pacific Standard time. ``From the sound of their voices they were pleased to hear about the arrest in the murder of their son,'' he said.

A composite of the gunman was made with the help of a key witness to the slaying, a 47-year-old Sherman Oaks woman who Ennis Cosby had been en route to meet that night.

When the tire went flat, he called her on his cellular phone and she arrived to illuminate the road with her headlights.

She told police that when she arrived, a man tapped on her window. Scared, she drove off, returning a short time later to find Ennis Cosby dead.

With the help of tabloid newspapers, some $300,000 in reward money was offered for information leading to the arrest of Cosby's killer.

It was unclear who might claim the reward.

Cosby was buried Jan. 19 at his family's Massachusetts estate after a memorial service attended by his father, his mother, Camille, four sisters and best friend Phil Caputo.
