CORVETTE OWNERS TO CONVERGE ON SANTA MONICA PIER JUNE 3 TO KICK OFF NEW 'ROUTE 66' TV SHOW AND CELEBRATE CORVETTE'S 40TH BIRTHDAY

LOS ANGELES, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Dozens of Corvette owners, at Chevrolet's request, will celebrate Corvette's 40th birthday a little early (actual 40th is June 30) with a June 3, 9:30 a.m., get-together on the Santa Monica Pier at the very end of old U.S. Route 66. They plan to be eager participants in NBC's kickoff of its new "Route 66" series which debuts June 8.
Corvette clubs in California received a notice from Chevrolet last week, inviting Corvette owners to join in the festivities, which include ceremonies with Santa Monica Mayor Judy Abdo; NBC and Columbia Pictures Television officials; Dora Nowicki, Chevrolet's regional car and truck manager; Paul Schnoes, executive director, National Corvette Museum; the show's two stars, Dan Cortese ("MTV Sports") and James Wilder ("Equal Justice"); dozens of Corvettes flanking the pier as well as several hand-picked early '60s Corvettes at the end of the pier, and a 40th anniversary Corvette Convertible to be driven cross-country by author Michael Wallis ("Route 66: The Mother Road"). The day's activities will conclude with a procession of Corvettes down Ocean Avenue while Wallis continues his familiar Route 66 trek.
A small but growing number of Corvette owners plan to follow Wallis in the ruby red 1993 Corvette across the full length of Route 66 with stops in the following cities:
 June 3 Flagstaff, Ariz.
 June 4 Albuquerque, N.M.
 June 5 Amarillo, Texas
June 6 Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.
June 7 Springfield and St. Louis, Mo.
 June 8 Chicago
Corvettes spanning the sports car's 40 years will be represented on the pier, including the only known 1953 in the area, owned by Dorothy Shirley of Whittier, Calif. Tom Souza of Chatsworth, Calif. plans to bring his '57 (No. 911) LAPD Racing Team Corvette. Patrick Collins of Etiwanda will roll up in his '65 Corvette, featured in the last episode of the original "Route 66" program. And Frank Head will bring his '69 silver Roadster, signed by Zora Arkus-Duntov, Corvette's legendary first chief engineer. Thirty-eight Corvettes from the years 1960-1969 will be displayed. A total of 95 Corvettes are already registered for the event.
