CORVEL ANNOUNCES MANAGED-CARE SERVICE PROGRAM FOR THE HOME INSURANCE CO.
CORVEL ANNOUNCES MANAGED-CARE SERVICE PROGRAM FOR THE HOME INSURANCE CO. IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- CorVel Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: CRVL) announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Home Insurance Co., a New York-based leading national workers compensation insurer, for the provision of managed-care services to Home client companies. The multiyear agreement involves the delivery of patient assistance programs, preferred-provider networks and medical review services. The Home Insurance Co. plans to provide such programs to assure a positive-care management environment for client company-injured employees and to reduce medical expenses. "This new contract establishes a fully integrated managed care system," said CorVel Vice President Dan Davis, "which will provide early, proactive involvement in the management of the care for injured workers. Only through clinically sophisticated, active involvement with injured workers, can employers expect to reduce the destructive effects of excessive workers compensation expenses. The CorVel program acts as such an agent for employers. "We have been aggressively investing in state-of-the-art systems and clinical software," added Davis. "This contract reflects the results of our investment, and our vision of evermore effective forms of care management." CorVel offers both local services where interaction with the patient and the provider community are vital to success, and sophisticated, centrally delivered utilization management and medical review services which leverage technical expertise and information management capacities. In addition to its existing service locations, CorVel will be providing "on-site" capabilities for key Home installations. Workers compensation costs have risen rapidly during the last decade. Employers have seen such costs reduce their competitive position and erode the workplace environment. State regulations controlling workers compensation, and the growing litigation associated with such cases, have made for a difficult challenge to employers in most states. CorVel's strategy combines proactive care management by a medical professional and sophisticated reimbursement review to address both the course of care plans and the cost of that care. While in the past such programs were felt to be excluded by workers compensation laws, recent improvement in many state statutes have "enabled" more active management. CorVel has capitalized on the improving regulatory environment, and its extensive experience in the workers compensation community, to put together an integrated continuum of managed-care services. Managed care approaches to medical management offer the opportunity to work prospectively with providers to assure that care plans are in the best interests of injured workers. Often, providers need assistance evaluating workers' limitations in the context of job requirements. A CorVel professional, working with the employer, provider and patient can improve either the healthcare outcome, the cost of the care or both. In workers compensation, such managed-care techniques must be tailored to comply with the individual laws of each state, as well as the needs of both the workers and the employer. CorVel has managed-care plans for more than 500,000 workers. CorVel Corp. is an independent, national provider of medical cost containment and managed-care services. The company operates from more than 90 offices, providing services in 42 states. -0- 11/9/92 /CONTACT: Gordon Clemons of CorVel, 714-851-1473/ (CRVL) CO: CorVel Corp.; Home Insurance Co.
