CORTERRA Polymers PDO Team Wins Best Paper Award at EXPO '98.HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 25, 1999--Dr. Tom Forschner, senior research chemist, and Dave Gwyn, senior technical associate, both with Shell Chemical Company, have been honored with a best paper award by the Society of the Plastics Industry Founded in 1937, The Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. is the trade association representing one of the largest manufacturing industries in the United States. SPI's members represent the entire plastics industry supply chain, including processors, machinery and equipment polyurethane exposition, "EXPO '98." The exposition was attended by 1700 people from 37 different countries. The paper, "Polyurethane Hot Melt Adhesives Based on 1,3-Propanediol (PDO PDO Php Data Objects (PHP extension) PDO Protected Designation of Origin (EC) PDO Pacific Decadal Oscillation (weather) PDO Property Damage Only )," was presented by Dr. Kurt Frisch of the Polymer Institute at the University of Detroit-Mercy. Frisch, a pioneer in the polyurethane field, was the second person to be inducted into the Polyurethane Hall of Fame. "Polyurethane Hot Melt Adhesives Based on 1,3-Propanediol" received the best paper award in the Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants, and Elastomers (CASE) Category. Papers were judged on the basis of originality, relevance of the technology, the effectiveness of the speaker and the clarity of the presentation. Forschner and Gwyn's paper, co-authored with Dr. Frisch and three members of the Polymer Institute, deals with the synthesis of hot melt urethane urethane (yoor´ithān´), n ethyl carbamate used as an anesthetic agent for laboratory animals, formerly used as a hypnotic in humans. adhesives incorporating PDO manufactured by Shell and PDO-based polyester polyols. The paper is believed to be the first to show the value of including these chemicals in hot melt adhesives. Hot melt adhesives form a bond that dries rapidly after application, speeding up production of glued articles and thus improving production efficiency. The PDO-based polyurethanes show tear strength and lap shear strength For the shear strength of soil, see . Shear strength in engineering is a term used to describe the strength of a material or component against the type of yield or structural failure where the material or component fails in shear. in a range suitable for many applications in the automotive, industrial and consumer markets. The researchers envision the utilization of PDO in many additional formulations which would broaden the range of available properties. Gwyn joined Shell's Westhollow Technology Center in 1976. Since 1993 he has been a technician in various exploratory research programs. He has been a part of many different phases of Shell's growing CORTERRA Polymers business and is presently focused on polyols and related applications.
