With the help of $58,000 approved by City Council, Corriganville Park may officially reopen to the public as early as this summer.

Although hikers and sightseers will be the first to benefit, city officials and preservationists hope that movie studios will once again choose the 180-acre park as a location for shooting feature films and television programs.

 said Wednesday. ``But if nothing else, it needs to be open before people can be interested.''

The $58,000 approved Monday by the City Council will be matched by the Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Recreation and Park District, which will set up a timetable for reopening the park.

, senior administrative assistant for the park district, did not return phone calls. But Davis said the park could open within 90 days.

An additional $100,000 has been donated by the city's two Rotary clubs to build a huge canopy near the Sherwood Forest Sherwood Forest, formerly a large royal forest, mainly in Nottinghamshire, central England. Remnants of the forest exist near Mansfield and Hucknall; efforts began in the 1990s to replant and expand it. It is famous as the haunt of Robin Hood and his band.  section for picnicking and youth groups, Davis said.

Money will also be used to trim trees, grade roads and a parking lot for 80 vehicles, build restrooms and install picnic tables, he said.

Gregg Anderson, a member of the Corriganville Preservation Committee, said he was excited about the council's decision.

``We've been hoping for nine years to get the park reopened. This is the first positive step to get it going,'' he said.

The Corriganville Park was acquired by Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  and the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District in 1988.

Built in 1937, Corriganville was opened as a Old West-themed amusement park amusement park, a commercially operated park offering various forms of entertainment, such as arcade games, carousels, roller coasters, and performers, as well as food, drink, and souvenirs.  in 1946 by Ray ``Crash'' Corrigan. The site was also a large movie lot for innumerable westerns and TV shows, such as ``Rin Tin Tin'' and ``The Lone Ranger.''

The park closed in 1966 - a year after being purchased by comedian Bob Hope. A fire in 1970 destroyed remaining movie sets and buildings.
