CORRIE IS KICKED OFF WEDNESDAY NIGHT TV; Telly chiefs move soap to Thursday to clear the way for Champions League footie.

CORONATION Street Coronation Street is an award-winning British soap opera. It is the longest-running television soap opera in the United Kingdom, first broadcast on Friday, 9 December, 1960 in the Granada region of ITV.  is being booted out of its Wednesday night slot after almost 50 years to make way for Champions League football.

Wednesday night episodes - a fixture since the soap's launch in 1960 - are being moved to Thursdays from July 23.

It's part of a drama dream team for ITV (1) See interactive TV.

(2) (iTV) The code name for Apple's video media hub (see Apple TV).
1, along with two episodes of Emmerdale and the debut of The Bill's new look.

Vacated

ITV1's live coverage of the Champions League, FA Cup and England internationals will slip into the slot vacated by the Street at 7.30pm on Wednesdays.

Emmerdale's Tuesday double episode has been cut in half as part of the change.

Fans will instead get two episodes on Thursdays - at 7pm and 8pm - followed by the soap at 8.30pm.

But there will still be 180 minutes of Emmerdale and 150 minutes of Corrie each week.

And the Street won't clash with EastEnders on BBC BBC
 in full British Broadcasting Corp.

1. An ITV spokesman said: "We're delighted that Thursday evenings on ITV1 will be a great showcase for soap from Weatherfield and the Woolpack."

Some Corrie fans may be annoyed at the shake-up.

But an insider said: "In the past viewers of both sexes have been upset when Coronation Street or Emmerdale have moved because of the football.

"The change means this won't happen now."

Coronation Street regularly attracts between nine and 10million viewers.

Emmerdale's viewing figures average around seven million every episode.

The Bill is moving to an edgier 9pm as part of the reshuffle.
