WHAT:           Given the unprecedented rise in childhood obesity
                figures, this epidemic is quickly becoming a top
                legislative priority. As California's landmark
                Childhood Obesity Prevention Act (SB 677) nears a
                final vote, Dr. Wootan of the Center for Science in
                the Public Interest (CSPI) will showcase other policy
                areas where the state's elected officials can take a
                national leadership position. The briefing is being
                co-convened by the California Center for Public Health
                Advocacy and the Task Force on Youth and Workplace
                Wellness.


WHY:            As Dr. Wootan is quoted as saying, "The government
                needs to put in place policy and change the
                environment around people so that it is easier for
                them to eat well and be active."

WHO:            Dr. Margo Wootan is the director of nutrition policy
                at CSPI, one of the country's leading consumer
                advocacy organizations that specializes in nutrition
                and other health issues. She received her B.S. in
                nutrition from Cornell University and her doctorate
                from Harvard University's School of Public Health. Dr.
                Wootan founded and coordinates the activities of the
                National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity, and is a
                member of the Steering Committee and the co-chair of
                the Policy Subcommittee for the National 5 A Day
                Partnership.
