of the memorial, designed by O'Connell Robertson & Associates. Sunset Red granite, supplied by local granite retailer Granite Mountain Stone Design, a division of Cold Spring Granite Company, are utilized throughout the memorial's structure.

The memorial's design provides a site for Texans to remember and honor the victims of Sept. 11. The design includes a rising spiral of Texas granite signifying the increasing impact of the day's events and the growing strength and compassion of the American people An American people may be:
  • any nation or ethnic group of the Americas

. The Star of Texas is at the monument's base commemorating the Texas victims of Sept. 11. The memorial wall was constructed out of 12 inch thick solid Sunset Red granite, the same granite that the State Capitol was built out of in the 1880s.

Within the granite walls are four benches where visitors can pause to reflect on the tragic events of that day. Between the benches, five plaques commemorate the major events of the day, beginning with the attack on the North Tower at the World Trade Center, and culminating in President Bush's statement of national resolve.

"We feel a great sense of pride to know Texas granite from our local quarry, Granite Mountain, will forever embody the Texas memorial for Sept. 11," said John Packer, general manager of Granite Mountain Stone Design. "Granite often symbolizes endurance because of its strong surface, and it is the perfect representation of the strength of the Texans impacted by Sept. 11, who will be forever commemorated in the memorial.
