) demonstrated system interoperability with Maxtor's 3.5 inch form factor SAS Hard Disk Drive (HDD) and multiple industry standard SAS controller implementations. This milestone is significant in providing a complete, end-to-end compatible system solution to enable server and storage system OEMs to capitalize on the advantages of the Serial Attached SCSI standard.

The PM8380 QuadSMX(TM) 3G device provides physical layer system interconnect between industry standard SAS HDDs and SAS host controllers. Error-free read and write operations were validated at 3Gb/s in accordance with the Serial Attached SCSI INCITS INCITS INternational Committee for Information Technology Standards  (InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards The International Committee for Information Technology Standards, or INCITS (pronounced "insights" [1]), is an ANSI-accredited forum of IT developers. "PMC-Sierra is working closely with our industry partners to enable the benefits of gigabit serial interconnect technology and the SAS protocol standard for the enterprise storage market," said Mark Stibitz, vice president and general manager of PMC-Sierra's Enterprise Storage Division. "Being first to market with interoperable physical layer products enables our customers to launch system designs, accelerating the transition from parallel SCSI to Serial Attached SCSI storage."

"Maxtor continues its commitment to early interoperability testing with technology partners to help move the industry closer toward its goal of SAS product availability in late 2004," said Kevin Wittmer, director of technical marketing at Maxtor. "We are pleased to demonstrate the interoperability of our in-form-factor, dual-port SAS disk drive with PMC-Sierra's SAS multiplexer/demultiplexer, as it underscores the design maturity of Maxtor's SAS disk drive."

About Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)

Serial Attached SCSI is the logical evolution of SCSI, including its long-established software advantage and the Serial ATA electrical and physical connection interface. With enterprise storage requirements escalating and becoming more complex, factors such as larger capacity, greater density, security, scalability and accessibility are more critical than ever. Enterprise data centers must be online all the time, fulfill requests from numerous users simultaneously, allow for constant growth and expansion and be maintained while in operation. Serial Attached SCSI meets all these demands while providing the highest performance. For more information, visit www.scita.org.
