In BW5425 issued Nov. 20, 2003: First graph, second sentence of release should read: The license is exclusive within the pulp and paper industry The global pulp and paper industry is dominated by North American (United States, Canada), northern European (Finland, Sweden) and East Asian countries (such as Japan).  Bridge (MIB) non-destructive testing technology to provide inspection services in power plants, paper mills, and other process plants. The license is exclusive within the pulp and paper industry and pipeline inspection applications.

Longview Inspection is the nation's largest provider of non-destructive testing (NDT NDT Newfoundland Daylight Time ) services, with 27 offices and more than 800 full-time employees. Its affiliate Canspec, which is included in the license, is Canada's largest NDT services provider.

MIB is a hardware and software solution based on an inductive measurement system that detects boiler-tube thinning caused by fireside erosion and corrosion and internal corrosion. In the coal-fired power generation business alone, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI EPRI Electric Power Research Institute
EPRI European Parliaments Research Initiatives
) estimates losses of billions of dollars annually due to downtime caused by leaks in the plants' boiler tubes. The MIB system can reduce this problem by identifying tube thinning before significant leaks occur.

MIB provides broader coverage than older systems such as ultrasonic testing In ultrasonic testing, very short ultrasonic pulse-waves with center frequencies ranging from 0.1-15 MHz and occasionally up to 50 MHz are launched into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials.  (UT) and eddy current, partly due to fast and simple operation but primarily because it produces instantaneous area readings instead of point-by-point readings, allowing for much higher production rates.

"This unique solution affords plant owners the option of mapping much larger areas of water wall panels than ever before. When combined with Longview's UT mapping capability, the technique will achieve an unprecedented level of data on boiler tube condition," said Mike Creech, Longview president.

"Longview's excellent reputation and market standing, along with its rapid recognition of MIB's power and potential, made it the obvious choice for a licensing agreement in the paper mill and process plant businesses," said George Rhodes, Avistar E.V.P. and C.O.O.

Unlike UT and eddy current testing, MIB sees through fly ash and other non-ferromagnetic wall build-up and so obviates expensive pre-cleaning of the water wall, including sandblasting Sandblasting or bead blasting[1] is a generic term for the process of smoothing, shaping and cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles across that surface at high speeds; the effect is similar to that of using sandpaper, but provides a more even finish . It also requires no couplant. The system is deployed through either a robotic, wall-climbing unit or a wand-mounted handheld unit, depending on the client's needs. The MIB robot allows inspection of remote boiler areas without the expense of scaffolding. The MIB handheld provides a fast, convenient and easy-to-use inspection solution when scaffolding or other personnel access is available.

MIB inspection is available now to Longview's clients with the MIB handheld. The MIB robot is currently in limited use through Avistar only and will be available through Longview in the near future.
