CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN HONES ITS GAME EARLY.

Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

The mighty mite mite, small, often microscopic chelicerate that, along with the tick, makes up the order Acarina; it is also related to spiders. Fast-forward one year and the Eagles are 11-1 overall and, at 4-1 in league, in the thick of the championship race.

It's a chase that prepares the Eagles for the rigors of competition in the Southern Section's smallest division.

``We're the only one in our division (V-A) in our league,'' coach Dennis Deutsche said. ``Some of the teams we play - Cate, Villanova Prep, Thacher - they're better than the teams we'll face in the playoffs. It is absolutely to our benefit to be playing them.''

Cate (265), Villanova Prep (280) and Thacher (255) are all at least three times the size of Cornerstone, yet the Eagles not only can compete, but, as shown last year, win.

The team lost three players from the 1996 championship squad, including standout Julie Siefert, but with the seven returnees, led by middle blocker Alizabeth Johnston, setter-outside hitter Tracy Sasaki and setter-outside hitter Julia Tamai, the Eagles are not far from the level they played at last year.

The early success has not left the impression that their work is done.

``I think we have the potential to do as well,'' Deutsche said. ``Maybe not league, but the team could repeat in CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. CIF formats are defined by their resolution, and standards both above and below the original resolution have been established. The original CIF is also known as Full CIF (FCIF). , if the girls play like they can.''

Tamai, a three-sport standout, noted that the team's chemistry isn't quite where it should be, but it is progressing.

``We're not where we should be,'' Tamai said, ``but we're coming along well.''

Said Sasaki: ``We have a little bit of work to do. We're more well-rounded this year, but we need to get more focused. I hope we can (get back to the CIF championship) because it was really an exciting time.''

``Julia plays with such passion, drive and emotion that she pushes the team to the next level,'' Deutsche said. ``She can control the tempo tempo [Ital.,=time], in music, the speed of a composition. The composer's intentions as to tempo are conventionally indicated by a set of Italian terms, of which the principal ones are presto (very fast), vivace (lively), allegro (fast),  and take over.

``Tracy's knowledge of the game is tremendous. You can tell she loves the game. Fundamentally, she's my best. When we're in a spot I know she can get me a good kill.''

Johnston, at 5-foot-10, is the team's tallest player. ``She's my one true middle-blocker,'' Deutsche said.

Aside from the team's athletic prowess PROWESS Infectious disease A clinical trial–Recombinant Human Activated Protein C [Zovant] Worldwide Evaluation in Severe Sepsis , Deutsche is proud that every player has at least a 3.7 grade-point average.

``These girls really see the big picture,'' Deutsche said. ``They try their best to grow academically and athletically, but spiritual growth always takes precedence The order in which an expression is processed. Mathematical precedence is normally:
