CORNER KICKS PREP SOCCER NEWS AND FEATURES FROM AROUND THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY ... AND BEYOND.Byline: Heather Gripp and Erik Boal RECORD WATCH A few of the area's leading boys' players are scoring at such a prolific pace that they could set team single-season scoring records before league play begins. Hart of Newhall senior forward Matt Valaika is putting up the gaudiest numbers. His seven goals Tuesday gave him 24 in 11 games, just four shy of the Indians' season record set by Jim Hofferber in 1987. Valaika finished one goal short of the record last season, when he led the Foothill League with 27 goals. This season, Valaika has been nearly unstoppable, giving one incredible performance after another. A little more than a week after scoring a team-record six goals in one game, Valaika netted seven in two games Tuesday despite sitting out much of the action to rest a sore leg. He has scored in all but one game this season. ``He's just on fire right now,'' noted Hart coach Robert Ramirez, who said it is not uncommon for opponents to triple-team Valaika. San Fernando's Rene Renteria also could have his team's single-season record for goals by the end of the week. The senior forward increased his season total to 16 Tuesday with three goals in Hart tournament play. The Tigers believe the program record is 19 goals, set last season by All-City forward Rudy Maravilla. ``We're pretty sure that's the record,'' said San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina San Fernando (săn fərnăn`dō), city (1991 pop. 144,761), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. So Rene should break the record. He's been hot.'' Palmdale's Jose Garay has been just as hot. The senior has 19 goals through 12 games. He netted four goals and an assist in Tuesday's victory over Monroe of North Hills as the Falcons won their pool at the Hart tournament. Anderson scored a goal in Highland's 6-0 rout of Locke of Watts. ``Oh my God, I was so happy,'' Paolo said. ``I didn't expect her to even play in the tournament, and maybe even the rest of the season. So when she walked out on the field (Tuesday), it was a pleasant surprise.'' Paolo also welcomed back junior Courtney Morrell, who was sidelined for almost two weeks with flu. Morrell had a goal and two assists in victories over Locke and Garey of Pomona in pool-play competition Tuesday, and she added a goal in Wednesday's 4-0 quarterfinal romp victory over Alverno of Sierra Madre Sierra Madre, city, United States Sierra Madre (sēĕr`ə mä`drā), residential city (1990 pop. 10,762), Los Angeles co., S Calif., at the foot of Mt. Despite playing at less than full strength for the second consecutive tournament, Highland advanced to its third consecutive championship game at Lancaster, reaching today's noon final with a 2-1 victory over Victor Valley of Victorville. The Bulldogs will play Lancaster, which defeated Tehachapi on penalty kicks in Wednesday's semifinals. COSTLY VICTORY Valencia coach Sean O'Connell has had his hands full since taking over the program from Tony Scalercio. Gordon's strike improved her career total to 113, putting her in position to pass former Chatsworth standout Lindsey Redlin for fourth on the area's all-time scoring list. The Highlanders have been away at tournaments, both of their league games were on the road, and even their preseason scrimmage against St. Francis of La Canada was away. The Highlanders finally get a home game on Wednesday when they return to Marmonte play against Newbury Park. Six of their next eight games are at home. He said it was something family-related, but he's going to have some explaining to do when he gets back. We could really use him.'' Even without Garcia, San Fernando defeated La Salle 4-3 to win its pool and advance to the quarterfinals.
