SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE

Alemany of Mission Hills' boys couldn't help but act like little kids. The Indians partied at Chuck E. Cheese's <noinclude></noinclude>

Chuck E. Cheese's is a chain of family entertainment centers. The concept centers around a basic sit-down pizza restaurant, complemented by arcade games, small rides, animatronic characters, and other popular diversions for young
, celebrating something the team hadn't experienced in years: feeling like a winner.

Alemany, which eight days ago ended an 86-game Mission League winless streak with a 2-0 triumph over Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks, was just as excited when on Friday it tied first-place Loyola of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Div. II.

``Most people would be just happy to tie Loyola,'' Alemany senior captain Jared Long said. ``We went crazy.''

The recent run of success follows years of frustration. Many of the Indians' players have played for the varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of  for three years, and until the victory last week over Notre Dame, the program hadn't won a league game since 1998.

``(Losing) was hard,'' said Long, a central midfielder. ``But all of us thought this was coming. The key this year is the team unity and heart. And we have great coaches.''

First-year coach Sedina Seck, who previously coached the Alemany girls' team, counts on Long, Jake Donnan, Phil Pontelic, Will Cortave, Ramon Cardenas and goalkeeper Hannes Richards.

A 3-2 nonleague victory Tuesday over Golden Valley provided the Indians (2-6-2) another victory - running their unbeaten streak to three games - and the confidence gained against Loyola has them believing they can contend for a playoff berth.

WINNING WHEN IT COUNTS

It's no big deal when Thousand Oaks' boys are winless a month into the season. The Lancers lanc·er

``It's a little deceiving, our overall record, because of the way we approach the preseason,'' Thousand Oaks coach Mark Tietjen said. ``For us, the way our program runs, the preseason is not so much about wins and losses. We use the preseason to give our players a chance to show where they fit in and what they can do. Everyone gets a chance.''

Freshman Eddie Gonzalez has emerged as one of the Lancers' top scorers. Senior John Wessely moved around the backline backline

Senior Chance Myers' value is obvious - the UCLA-bound senior is widely considered the area's most talented player - but his role was uncertain. The Lancers tried him at forward, but he was marked so heavily that he was unable to produce goals. Now he's back in midfield, where his distribution is pivotal for T.O.'s attack.

``This is a statement week for Taft soccer,'' Venger said. ``If we go 0-2 this week, then we are probably the same old fourth- or fifth-place team in the West Valley League.''

Things didn't get off to a good start for Taft (10-6-4, 1-2-0), which was beaten 4-0 Tuesday at El Camino Real. Venger hopes playing against a team as speedy and skillful skill·ful
