to ease a step closer to their European goal when they scored a 2-0 home win over the Candystripes in Cork last night.

After a day of incessant rain the game finally got the go-ahead after two pitch inspections and Cork took full advantage to leapfrog Derry with just six games to go to the end of the season.

Cork, with just one defeat in their previous six matches, took an 18th minute lead when Bosnian striker Faz Kuduzovic scored from the spot after Latvian striker Guntars Silagailis was tripped in the box by James McLean James McLean may refer to:

.

City's top scorer Kuduzovic claimed his sixth league goal of the season, scoring with a right-footed drive into the top corner.

Cork doubled their advantage within five minutes when former Derry player Billy Dennehy scored with a tap-in at the far post after Kuduzovic squared the ball to him after a Dan Murray Dan Murray is a defender and the current captain of Cork City FC.

Two goals in the space of five minutes stunned the visitors who had lost just once in their last seven matches that included a five-match winning streak.

The weather was a factor in last night's attendance -returned as 1,745 - which was disappointing given the significance of the match as both sides chase European football.

With champions Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers both knocked out of the FAI Cup, third place is the only guarantee of European football for both Cork and Derry.

Cork had the better of the second half as well but wasted three chances as Kuduzovic, twice, and Davin O'Neill fired over before Derry's response had Mark Farren hitting the upright from a tight angle midway through the second half.

Derry's only other goal threat arrived 20 minutes from time but Dan Connor made a fine save to deny Kevin Deery.

Cork's next league action is away to Bray Wanderers on Friday night but leftwinger Billy Dennehy will miss the match because of a one-match suspension.
