CORDERO ADMITS HE'S UNLIKELY TO DERAIL LUKAS.

Jockey Angel Cordero Jr. gave D. Wayne Lukas Darrell Wayne Lukas (born September 2, 1935 in Antigo, Wisconsin) is a former educator who became one of the most successful horse trainers in American Thoroughbred horse racing history and a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee.  his first Preakness victory 16 years ago. Today, trainer Cordero will try to end Lukas' streak of six wins in Triple Crown races.

Cordero concedes his chances of winning with Feather Box are slim.

Asked how he felt about Feather Box, winner of one of three starts this year, being made a 50-1 shot in the early line, Cordero laughed and said, ``I'm happy, I thought he was going to be 100-1.''

He also said, ``You can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket.''

Cavonnier, second by a nose in the Kentucky Derby Kentucky Derby

Cavonnier, the Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000.  winner, was the 9-5 early choice, while Lukas' Prince of Thieves, third in the Derby, was next at 7-2 and his Editor's Note Editor's Note (foaled in 1993 in Kentucky) is an American thoroughbred Stallion racehorse. He was sired by 1992 U.S. Champion 2 YO Colt Forty Niner, who in turn was a son of Champion sire Mr. Prospector and out of the mare, Beware Of The Cat.

Joining Feather Box in making their debuts in Triple Crown competition will be Tour's Big Red, Mixed Count, Allied Forces, and Secreto de Estado.

Mixed Count was to van in from his base at nearby Laurel, Md., the morning of the race.

Team Lukas flew in from Louisville on Thursday, while Skip Away was transported in by van from Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

``We got killed,'' trainer Sonny Hine said of Skip Away's disappointing performance in the Derby on the heels of the colt's sensational victory in the Blue Grass Stakes The Blue Grass Stakes, currently sponsored by the Toyota Motor Corporation, is an American Grade 1 horse race for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds held annually in mid April at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Kentucky. . ``But I feel good about him. The Lukas factor: Trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who has won two straight Belmont Stakes, two straight Kentucky Derbies and looks for his third straight Preakness Stakes, will field three horses: Prince of Thieves, Editor's Note and Victory Speech.

Hollywood Park betting:Simulcast with five earlier Pimlico stakes start at 9:41 a.m. The Hollypark feature, the $125,000 Wilshire Handicap, matches Matiara against Pharma and three other fillies and mares on turf.
