Thousands of aviation buffs and their families turned out Saturday to watch a close-up demonstration of how law enforcement pilots use helicopters to chase criminals, rescue stranded victims and ensure homeland security Noun 1. Up to 10,000 people gathered at the Hansen Dam Hansen Dam in Los Angeles County, California was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District in 1939 and 1940. The project is located near the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley on Tujunga Wash, about one mile below the confluence of the Big Tujunga Wash  Recreation Center for the 12th annual American Heroes Air Show, featuring helicopter rescue squads from the U.S. armed services The Constitution authorizes Congress to raise, support, and regulate armed services for the national defense. The President of the United States is commander in chief of all the branches of the services and has ultimate control over most military matters.  and police and fire departments from surrounding cities and counties.

Children and adults from all over California lined up to speak to and take pictures with police and men and women in the service. For $25, visitors could ride on one of about a dozen helicopters.

 event has been held at Hansen Dam, with support from City Council members Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City  and Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007. .

Nate Falkenstein, a petty officer for the U.S. Coast Guard, said he enjoys watching the kids get excited about aviation.

``I'd like to think that some of these kids will walk away thinking, 'Hey, I'd like to do that someday,''' said Falkenstein, hoisting two small children out of a bright orange helicopter.

Despite a childhood boating accident, Falkenstein went on to join the Coast Guard after high school.

Every year since 1993, the free event has featured aircraft that potentially get called out to duty during the exhibit, said volunteer and executive producer Jim Paules.

``One of the unique things about this event is that even when we try to have a clean schedule, helicopters still get called to put out fires,'' said Paules.

Karen Dearborn, a Los Angeles sheriff's deputy for 21 years, said that since she started working as a helicopter observer one year ago, she gets sent all over the county for assistance.

``When you're working on the ground, you might get a pursuit every now and then. But when you're working in the air, it's one hot call after another,'' said Dearborn. ``This is exactly the same thing you might see on the news, only it's just an average day's work for us.''
