COPTER LOSES POWER, CRASHES.

A cameraman was injured Thursday when a helicopter crashed in the desert outside Palmdale while filming an NBC NBC

The helicopter was passing over vehicles traveling along two-lane 70th Street East when it apparently experienced a mechanical problem and dropped into the sand and Joshua trees beside the road, flipping onto its side, officials said.

Cameraman Thomas Cox, 46, was bruised and cut and complained of internal pain, officials said. The road, which passes through miles of open desert east of Palmdale, had been closed to traffic Thursday for the filming, CHP officials said. The helicopter went down on the last shot scheduled for the day.

The pilot told firefighters the helicopter lost power, officials said.

``In his words, something went loose,'' Robinson said.
