COPS ZERO IN ON WEST VALLEY ROVING TASK FORCE AIMS TO CURB CRIME, DRUNKS, SPEEDERS.

Nearly 100 police officers fanned out Thursday across a 15-square-mile area of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The task force has been so successful that the LAPD's command staff is considering extending the program through the fall, Meyer said.

The neighborhood targeted Thursday lies in the LAPD's West Valley Division jurisdiction, neighborhoods such as Reseda, Winnetka and Canoga Park. Police patrolled areas bordered by Topanga Canyon and Roscoe boulevards, Vanowen Street and White Oak Avenue.

Police say they've seen an increase in gang shootings and graffiti there and that the region has its share of speeding motorists.

``Shootings have gone up in the last couple of weeks,'' said Sgt. Miles Taylor, a West Valley patrol officer assigned to Thursday's task force.
