How convenient for the government! The Commons Public Administration Committee has put off until July at the earliest its investigation into cash for peerages allegations about pounds 14million loaned to the Labour party by a dozen rich benefactors.

Tony Wright, the committee's Labour chairman, says he fears compromising "police action" (surely a contradiction in terms Noun 1. contradiction in terms - (logic) a statement that is necessarily false; "the statement `he is brave and he is not brave' is a contradiction"

That means his inquiry will not be able to report before the autumn because MPs have their 11-week break followed by the party conferences. And by then, unless Mr Plod has charged someone, the scandal will have I lost all political impact.

It will be wrapped up in a I general reform of party funding, I which will land the taxpayer I with an even bigger bill.

So the corrupt politicians I will get away with it. Again.
