A proposal to set up a special fund to pay for hiring more Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police officers was formally presented to the City Council on Friday.

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007. , with support from six colleagues, called for creation of the fund that would take cost savings from other city agencies to be used in a long-term plan to hire extra 1,740 officers.

Greuel said she hopes the full council will vote Tuesday to order a study within 60 days on the steps needed to create the fund.

Other council members who signed on in support are President Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City , Dennis Zine, Greig Smith, Tony Cardenas, Eric Garcetti and Bernard Parks. Council rules limit the number of members who can second a motion.

Under her proposal, each city department would be asked to make as many efficiencies as possible and be allowed to keep half of those savings. The remaining money would go into the police hiring fund.

Greuel said she arrived at the number as a way to get a total of 3,000 more police officers for the LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

, including the 1,260 officers the city expects to hire if the Measure A sales-tax increase is approved by county voters Nov. 2.

Measure A would raise the sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  in the county from 8.25 percent to 8.75 percent, raising some $560 million a year for law enforcement and public safety agencies countywide, including roughly $167 million for the city.
