He's the new breed of cop, says his boss, Val Paniccia, operations commander for the LAPD's Valley Bureau. The kind of cop, Paniccia says, who knows the city's never going to arrest its way out of gang violence. ``Mike knows you have to get involved with these kids at an early age to make things better, and that's what he does,'' Paniccia said. ``He's got a real kind heart, and these kids can see it.'' This Saturday, that kind heart and a lot of his friends on the police force and in the community will be hosting a party and toy giveaway for more than 2,000 disadvantaged kids at the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. He wanted to.'' The calls starting coming into council offices about six months ago. There was this patrol officer out of the Devonshire Division in Northridge - an Officer Scott - asking them to send him disadvantaged kids living in their districts. He wanted to throw them a party. The officer was a member of the LAPD Centurions baseball team, and they had some money and a lot of toys left over from some charitable community events they had been involved in this year. The toys were in Scott's garage, and his wife was bugging him to get them out of there before his own kids started digging into them. They already had enough toys, the cop said. He was looking to spoil some kids who didn't. ``I didn't want only the needy kids, but also the kids living on streets where they don't have the opportunity to get out of those gang areas,'' Scott said. ``I wanted to invite them out for the day.'' So, that's what he's doing this Saturday. Inviting 2,000 kids out for the day. ``Mike has this wonderful need to provide happiness for kids,'' said the Centurions team manager, Lt. Tim Moss. You don't need an invitation to come to this party, Mike says. If you know some kids who need some spoiling, bring them on by. The only request is that they be accompanied by a parent or a guardian to receive a toy. And if you know some spoiled kids who may need a reality check, bring them on by, too, because they're invited. He has only one request, says this Santa Claus wearing a badge. Have them bring a new toy for someone else. The party will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Los Angeles Police Academy, 1880 N. Academy Drive.
