COP, COACH WILL FILL SEAT DILIBERT INTERIM MEMBER OF BURBANK SCHOOL BOARD.

Byline: EUGENE TONG Staff Writer

BURBANK -- A police lieutenant and longtime volunteer sports coach has been appointed to the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  board as an interim member.

The board's four remaining members Thursday picked John Dilibert, a 19- year Burbank police veteran who has coached baseball and softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  at two local high schools. He was among five applicants seeking to fill in for Paul Krekorian Paul Krekorian was elected in 2006 to serve California's 43rd Assembly District, which includes the cities of Glendale and Burbank and the Los Feliz, Silver Lake, North Hollywood, Valley Glen, Toluca Lake, Atwater Village and Valley Village communities of Los Angeles. , who was elected in November to the 43rd Assembly District seat representing Burbank and Glendale.

Dilibert, 42, will serve out the rest of Krekorian's term ending April 30, when a newly elected member will take his place.

Greg Bowman, who served with Dilibert on a local leadership development group, said he's a good choice.

``He has many skills and a long history with Burbank Unified that he will be bringing to this position,'' he said.

Dilibert said he looks forward to fostering the existing partnership between the district and the police, while bringing new perspective to the panel.

``I believe in giving honest, open feedback and I believe in giving people an opportunity to develop,'' he said. ``A lot of what we do is setting the bar we want to shoot for and helping people to get there.''

It's unlikely Dilibert will serve beyond April -- he's not a candidate in the Feb. 27 primary, when three seats are up for re-election.

Only three names are on the ballot: incumbents Ted Bunch and Dave Kemp, and Burbank Council PTA PTA or parent-teacher association: see parent education.  President Roberta Grande Reynolds.

But Dilibert wouldn't rule out a future run.

``If this is something the public supports, then maybe I'll consider running down the road,'' he said. ``You're doing something you can honestly make a difference.''
